There are a few, Im sure.....I suppose it would be no less of a contradiction than being Christian and Republican...it never seems to bother them that they can pick and choose which values are worth following.

There was a Japanese fascist during WW II who is reputed also to have been a Zen master
but I harbor grave doubts, given the consequences of what they did...
As far as I am concerned, followrs of that greedy arrogant
war criminal Bush are as fascist as they come.

Ever hear of Log Cabin Republicans?

    Ray-gun Democrats?

Contradictions abound within both of our political parties....

So, I am guessing there are way more than we'd suppose.

MY conversation ending reply to Log Cabin Republicans
"Yeah, there were Jews who voted for Hitler, too."

Well taken that what I said is not necessarily the most compassionate way of dealing with people who at best
are deeply deluded. But I'm not sure. Avoidance? I'm not an overbearing touchy-feely pushy extrovert.
What is the best strategy for an introverted intellectual to deal wit people who are ignorant, and proud of it
(like the swing voters in the next election, may we be helped)...

I think we can only..... accept that their karma is what it is. As ours is what it is.

I have days when I say things like "yeah, and there were jews that voted for Hitler too" out of frustration. But, I know it doesn't change anything. It only hardens them to my reality.

I have found myself with strange bedfellows this election, to be honest. I am one of the "white, educated, latte drinkers" that crossed over to support the candidate of the working class. It is giving me a taste of what it's like to be considered a stupid yokel. It simply makes one feel the other side doesn't get it, and doesn't want my P.O.V. It doesn't provoke compassion, that's for sure. Nor understanding.

Lately, I have to really work at feeling compassion for all these first time voters who are about to get a serious schooling in U.S. politics. Cuz their arrogant remarks are a total turn-off. KWIM?

I think this can be described in psychology as intolerance for cognitive dissonance, which is precisely what Buddhism pertains to.. I was just reading Robert Thurman describe enlightment as the ultimate tolerance of cognitive dissonance ( outside.away.com/outside/d...tan-1.html ).

I think Buddhist have lots of contribution to make to the political system.. it's very exciting to think about!
  • If we are all buddhist by default then yes, republicans are buddhists too. so are the homeless or imprisoned or neglected or powerful. If we are all as one then the republican next door is just another aspect of you, as you are of them.
